Can I Sit?

A small stool for the 24X24X24 event at Storefront for Art and Architecture where 24 firms were asked to design a small seat and organize a one hour event as part of a continuous 24hr marathon. We all made small sketches to illustrate initial ideas which then became the starting point for what followed.

This seat was to be a manifesto of our own ideas, concerns, and ambitions, so its seemed natural to make something that was not too precisely defined. Like good architecture, it should serve a purpose, but always offer something more. Things change, and in time, how they're used will as well. The initial sketches for this stool outlined some familiar elements of a basic chair but missing some legs and placed in the wrong places. What is it for? Is it one or several? How is it used? Is it finished? Will it hold? Can I sit? This stool remains ambivalent about its use. Loosely familiar, it invites questions and misuse – it hopes to be misunderstood.
